BOCA RATON, FL - Weekend two of the Florida Atlantic softball schedule opens Friday, Feb. 17 with the 2006 FAU Dunkin' Donuts Classic.
The Owls (1-4) welcome perennial national power Alabama (5-0) and the Tide's SEC sister Ole Miss (2-3) to Boca Raton, along with South Florida neighbor Florida International (1-4). Missouri State and Long Island University will both open their seasons this weekend at FAU Softball Stadium, where play starts at 9:00 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Owls take the field at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on days one and two, facing Ole Miss and Missouri State on Friday and LIU and `Bama on Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
After opening the season this past Friday with a win over 2005 Super Regional qualifier Bethune-Cookman, FAU dropped four straight games to take fourth place as host of the Worth Invitational. The losses were by one run each.
Strong pitching welcomed the Owls on the opening weekend, with junior Jen Musillo (Tequesta, FL) and freshman Kathryn Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, FL) both putting up impressive numbers. Musillo went 1-1 on the weekend, surrendering just two earned runs in 16.0 innings for a 0.88 ERA.
While sitting 0-3 on the season, Stauffer carries an ERA of just 1.87 and has held opponents to a .170 batting average. Overall, opponents are batting just .190 against the two righties.
Six freshmen made appearances in the starting line-up for head coach Joan Joyce, who is in her 12th season at the helm of Owls softball. A total of 10 newcomers have seen playing time for FAU.
