BOCA RATON, FL -- Olivier Sajous, a Florida Atlantic University freshman, won the Delray Beach ATP pre-qualifying tournament and earned a wildcard spot in the Delray Beach ITC's qualifying tournament scheduled for Saturday, January 27, 2007.
Four qualifiers advanced from that tournament into the main draw, which will be held January 28 through February 4. Should Sajous advance, the Haitian native could face world-ranked James Blake, ranked no. 4, or Tommy Haas, ranked no. 11. The event has a $416,000 purse and will boast players ranked in the world's top-250.
The unseeded Sajous, a member of FAU's top-20 recruiting class, earned the spot after he captured the pre-qualifying event that included 127 individuals who are now ranked or were ranked in the world. It also included a draw full of top-flight college players and many of the best juniors in the world. Sajous captured seven matches and only dropped two sets. In the championship match, Sajous defeated Vadim Demchyshyn of the Ukraine 6-2, 6-2.
Sajous' victory comes at the heels of an excellent freshman fall season. He posted a 9-3 tournament singles record, including wins over players ranked no. 27 and no. 107 in the Division I rankings. Sajous will lead the Owls into their spring season home opener, January 21, when FAU plays host to Jacksonville University.
