Florida Atlantic University's men's tennis team opened the 2005-2006 season at the University of Miami Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, FL with several strong individual performances.
The Owls began their first season under the direction of head coach David Komie against Stetson University, in a non-conference tournament format where there is no team score, just individuals.
"I was generally pleased with our play today," Komie said. "The guys battled from the first point all the way to the last on all courts. I saw some things out there which showed we have improved our doubles. Although, we still have a lot or work left to do. I was especially pleased with Mauricio Paiz who was doing a great job of getting on top of the net for his volleys just as we have been working."
David Demers and Mauricio Paiz won the no. 4 and no. 5 positions, respectively, in two sets while teammate Gianfranco Dossena was victorious after his opponent Eddie Majcher retired after falling 6-3 in the first set and was down 4-3 in the second.
J.P. Bounassar played the longest match of the day taking Sergei Boulanov to three sets.
Doubles play proved to be hard fought as well with the doubles team of Demers and Kevin Obletz falling 8-6, Paiz/Dossena captured no. 2 doubles 8-5 and Bounassar/ Akin Akman fell 9-8 (5).
The Owls will return for more Saturday action at the Hurricane Invitational.
