Boca Raton, FL - More than a thousand fans soaked in the south Florida sunshine taking in the fifth annual Florida Atlantic University FanFest. Festivities kicked off at noon with music, a bounce house and local businesses showing support of the Owls. Volleyball, both men's and women's soccer and football signed 2005 posters and welcomed fans of all ages.
The scheduled scrimmage transformed into a stationary scrimmage and drills as injuries had taken a toll on the young Owls over the past week.
The practice began with a seven-on-seven drill on center stage with the offensive and defensive lines working on the side.
The team then went into a situational practice with head coach Howard Schnellenberger positioning the ball and calling the down and distance. Following 45 minutes of situational play, the 2005 FAU marching band performed for the first time since 2003 at the practice's half.
Following the brief intermission, the team went back onto the field, worked special teams and continued team drills.
The scheduled scrimmage came at a point in camp that many of the players had nagging injuries.
"In training camp, the first thing you begin to do is tear the body down and after you have done that you have to give it a chance to rebound and heal. We are right at the height of that," said Schnellenberger. "We have just about taken them down as far as we can go. That is the reason we ran gassers today. If we had had a full scrimmage, we wouldn't have. From here on in we need to start letting them rejuvenate. Based on our early season performance the last few years, we think we have a good plan to get them ready."
The Owls are scheduled to return to the practice field tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. and possibly could see a light day. Monday will be the first day of classes and will give the squad a regular schedule with meetings at 2:30 p.m. and field work at 3:30 p.m.
