BOCA RATON, FL -- One week of practice is officially in the books for the Florida Atlantic University football team.
The team completed their single session this afternoon, and will return to the field tomorrow morning for another three-a-day session.
"We were better today on both sides of the ball," head coach Howard Schnellenberger said.
"We've put in 80 percent of our offense and defense in at this point. As coaches we want to see them run the plays without error," he added.
Unfortunately, the Owls have had to deal with some nagging injuries at this point. Linebacker Shomari Earls remained out with a hamstring injury, and remains questionable. Fullback Aaron Sanchez returned to practice today after suffering a strained quadriceps muscle, but was forced to leave practice early after re-aggravating that injury. He is listed as day-to-day. Defensive tackle Vinnie Henderson missed today's practice with a hip flexor, linebacker Julian Myers was out with an ankle injury, and Carldayle Brantley missed practice with a strained MCL. All three players are listed as doubtful for tomorrow's practices.
"We're getting down to one or two guys at almost every position it seems," said Schnellenberger.
The flip side of injuries is that they often prove to be an opportunity for others. Players like DiIvory Edgecomb, who has made several great plays early in camp, were able to take some snaps with the first-team offense this afternoon.
"He has a lot of good moves. He's also strong and smart," Schnellenberger said.
Tomorrow is the second session of three-a-day workouts. Practice will begin at 8 a.m. and run to 9:15 a.m. The second session will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and the final session will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. FAU fans are welcome to attend any of the three sessions.
Don't forget Owl fans, FanFest is less than a week away, August 20 at noon. FanFest will take place on the Tom Oxley fields, the same location as all other practices. The players will take the field at 2:30 p.m., at which time they will participate in their second and final preseason scrimmage.
Coaches and players will also be available to sign autographs, and there will be an interactive youth area including face painting and inflatables. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet the cheer and dance teams as well as the marching band. Admission and parking are free. For more information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit fausports.com.
