St. Louis - Former Florida Atlantic pitcher Carmen Cali was called up to the majors by the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday and immediately made a significant impact, notching the team's final three outs in a 5-1victory over visiting Cincinnati. Cali entered the game in the ninth and gave up a hit, but quickly forced two fly outs and wrapped up a St. Louis win with a strikeout of the final batter.
This is the second time the left-handed reliever has been called up by the Cardinals, having previously made the team's active roster last September 3. Cali also spent spring training with the Cardinals, giving up just three earned runs - all against defending-champion Boston. With Class-AAA Memphis this spring, he pitched in three of the team's first four games, throwing 3 1/3 innings with no runs and three strikeouts.
"I knew going into spring training that it was going to be tough" to make the team, Cali said. "... I went down there (to Triple A) and did my thing in the four-game series, and now here I am - hoping to stick."
