BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (17-19) got off to a fast start on Tuesday night but couldn't maintain an early lead, falling 8-6 at the hands of Florida Gulf Coast (22-13). The sides will meet again on April 28 in Fort Myers.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls jumped on FGCU freshman Reed Biemiller for four runs in the bottom of the first. After hits by
Marshall Lipsey and
Kyle Boylston,
Ian Collier lined a two-RBI single up the middle to open the scoring. Two batters later,
John Martinez connected for a two-run home run to make it a 4-0 lead after one inning.
THE TURNING POINT
The Eagles' high-powered offense responded quickly with five runs in the top of the second, and they did it all with two outs and without an extra-base hit. After five singles, two walks, and 10 batters, the Owls departed the inning down 5-4. The Eagles added one to the lead with a solo home run in the sixth.
After scoring four runs on four hits in the first, the Owls' next hit didn't come until the sixth inning. Two walks and a hit-batter loaded the bases for
Eli Small, who lined a two-run single down the third base line to tie the game.
THE FINISH
FGCU took the lead for good in the eighth inning. A leadoff walk was followed by a two-run home run from Jon Embury to put the Eagles ahead 8-6.
The Owls had the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout and a flyout ended the hopes of a comeback.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
"Again… we get two outs in that second inning, and we can't get out of it. We gave up five runs with two outs. We just can't put together a complete game. It's frustrating."
THE BATS
- Boylston had two of the Owls' six hits, a double and a single.
- Martinez's home run was his third of the season. The two RBI bring his season total to a team-leading 27.
THE ARMS
- Bryan Boully made his first start of the season but departed with an injury after seven pitches.
- The Owls used seven relievers. Only Reilly Witmer completed an inning without allowing a run.
