BOCA RATON, FL - Florida Atlantic University seniors Kevin Obletz and David Demers each won a match in the main draw of the NCAA Southeast Regionals held at The Racquet Club of Memphis last weekend.
In the first round Obletz defeated Mississippi's Fredrik Aarum, 6-4, 1-0 (ret.) In the second, Obletz dropped a close match to no. 9 seed Philippe Frayssinous, from Mississippi State, 7-5, 7-5. He had two set points at 5-2 in the second but was unable to convert.
David Demers picked up a first round match victory against Austin Peay's Ankur Singh, 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, Demers faced the tournament's no. 5 seed Nestor Briceno from the University of Florida. Demers was down 6-0, 3-0 when he mounted a courageous comeback forcing a tiebreaker. Demers was up 5-4 in the tiebreaker but was unable to close out the match losing by a score of 6-0, 7-6.
In doubles, Obletz and Demers defeated Hunter Gerlach and Fadi Zanjaoui of Murray State 8-2. Obletz and Demers defaulted their second-round match due to injury.
Also competing in the tournament were Gianfranco Dossena and Mauricio Paiz. Dossena lost in the first round of qualifying to LSU's John Tragardh 6-4, 7-6. Paiz was defeated by Georgia State's Clarence Boyd 6-0, 6-0. The duo of Dossena and Paiz fell in doubles play to Mississippi's Juan Pablo Di Cesare and Jakob Klaeson 8-0.
The team will use the remainder of the fall to train for the 2006 season with the spring season opener at Florida State, 1 p.m., January 21.
