Florida Atlantic University welcomed back football to the Boca Raton campus Monday afternoon, as the Owls kicked off the start of their 2005 season with their first pre-season practice. FAU President Frank T. Brogan and Athletic Director Craig Angelos were on hand to watch the 105 players in attendance, including scholarship and preferred walk-ons. Four Owls, Thomas Parker, Dekolan James, Dantson Dareus and Christian Amaya, returned to practice full go after sustaining injuries last year. "It was a good first day of practice. I wouldn't call it spectacular. I wouldn't call it a bust," said head coach Howard Schnellenberger. "It's very obvious the young guys are not as well conditioned or mature as the other guys." The Owls first practice consisted of ball handling, lock and load and drive and torque drills for the offense and take-off chutes and sleds for the defense before the two sides joined for seven-on-seven and nine-on-nine drills. Taheem Acevedo made a nice interception in seven-on-seven play while Anthony Crissinger-Hill made two diving catches from Jared Allen. FAU will continue practice on Tuesday, August 10 at 3:30 pm. All practices are free and open to the public.
