Question from Mike Pfeifer: Hey Coach! Good to see that the program is doing well. As a player from 1988-1992, we played a brutal schedule, including one year in which we played 28 games in March alone. Has the division one status, a change in philosophy or another reason dictated the change into a less demanding streak of games? Also, is there any way for former players to stay in touch with each other through the FAU website? It would be great if we could find a way to keep in contact or at least be able to post e-mail addresses.
A:Hey Mike, Glad to see you are following us on the internet. I will add you to our alumni list and will send it to you. My e-mail is kcooney@fau.edu. Regarding the schedule...The big change is were are in a conference unlike your day as an independent DII school. We needed to play these 28 games in order to get a full schedule. Now we play 30 conference games a year, so we don't have to go through the "March Death March" that you and so many others experienced. Stay in touch up there in "the swamps of Jersey". KC
Question from P. Diaz: What are the names of the members of the original Three Amigos? Hint: One of the Three Amigos hit a game winning home run during the 1987 Division III World Series. In fact, you said that you would name your next child after him.
A: Hey Pete...Thanks for stopping by our Stetson game...Leroy, Pete and John...In the 10th inning of the championship game against Wisconsin Oshkosh, Leroy was at bat for Montclair State with the score tied and a runner at first. I felt we needed to bunt, or hit and run, but assistant coaches O'Connor and Giancola reminded me Leroy was not adept at either. Coach "G" said "Let him swing and see what happens." Home run...game over...National Champions...Nothing like good assistants. KC
Question from Tony VonDolteren: Do you think you have a shot at winning the A-Sun Tourney this year? What has happened to the dominating Beam and O'Brien that was supposed to carry this team? I would have got the job done!!!! Sorry to hear about Horst's mom...I lost mine when I was 7 and my brother was 4...now that was tough!!! Good luck to you coach...I truly miss FAU and everything you and Mac did for me!!!
A: Thanks Tony...Losing a mom is tough at any age, including 53. Thanks for thinking of Rob. I think Beam and OB have been very consistent this season. They each had a couple of off starts, but nobody but you is perfect. P.S. Work on you grammar...you are a public schoolteacher for crying out loud! KC
Question from Mitch Flax: How are the recruits for the '05 season? One of your top classes ever? I heard rumors of a new stadium, any truth? Thanks and good luck.
A: All recruits look great when you are signing them. How will they play in a Florida Atlantic uniforms determines a successful recruiting class. We are in the process of securing $6 million for a stadium. This is the most important step in the program's development. We will be in Vegas next March 4-6. Stop by and say hello. Thanks KC.
Question from Justin Dirico: How will the SunBelt effect the team? Will it bring it to the next level? What do you think will increase attendance?
A: The SunBelt will increase our travel and expose Florida Atlantic to a new region of the country. I think it is a better baseball conference than the A-Sun, particularly with the loss of UCF, Troy, Georgia State and FAU. I don't forsee much change in attendance because of the conference.
Question from Pete Gillen: What is the deal with the new baseball stadium. Are designs set? Will it be ready for next season. Will it be on par with the other top teams in the country?
A: Thanks for your interest Pete...I am expecting a final rendering from the architectural firm that built Auburn, Troy and Winthrop's stadiums. Winthrop's was beautiful when we were there in May. The cost is estimated at $6 million and will be the equal of many of the newer college facilities. We plan to expand the left and right field berms back about 60 feet to create a large lawn instead of a little hill. That will enable us to bring in 2400 portable seats in order to bid on a Regional. The fixed seating will be approximately 2100. Thanks KC
