Boca Raton - The defense came away with the first scrimmage victory of the pre-season Tuesday afternoon 25-22.
The offense sputtered at times with the defense holding them to three downs the first seven series, including a fumble recovery. In the modified scoring system, the defense is awarded one point for stoppage and three points for a turnover. The offense scores in the traditional fashion.
"We have more players with better talent than a year ago," said head coach Howard Schnellenberger. "We just need to develop consistency. The defense proved to be salty today. Most of the defense has almost 21 games under their belts. Today's game was making the play not the error."
The scrimmage was highlighted by big plays. Anthony Jackson had the longest run, a 56- yard carry and a 33-yard carry. Tight end, Anthony Crissinger-Hill had the first big reception with a 21-yard reception and followed it up with a 16-yard reception.
The first touchdown was a 1-yard scamper by quarterback Jared Allen. He also connected with Crissinger-Hill for a second. Joel Fosselman combined with Etiene Menard for a 9-yard touchdown reception. The offense was credited with four points on extra point conversions, converting on two of three two-point attempts.
Allen started the scrimmage and was 19-9-1 for 71-yards. Danny Embick, who played just one series and left early due to a pulled hamstring, was 1-3-0. Joel Fosselman, who didn't expect to receive as many reps, was 20-8-0 for 79 yards.
"I only expected to run two or three series," Joel Fosselman said concerning the most reps he has received in his collegiate career. "Coach O'Connor does a nice job getting us prepared."
FanFest scheduled for 2 pm, Saturday, at Lockhart will be an opportunity for fans to meet the FAU players and coaches, of all sports. An childrens interactive area will also be available and the band, cheer and dance teams will perform. The days festivities will conclude with a scrimmage scheduled for 4 pm.
