Florida Atlantic University placed 10 players on the 2003 Independent All-Star Team as selected by the Sports Information Directors of the independent schools. Jared Allen, Roosevelt Bynes, Anthony Crissinger-Hill and Quentin Swain top the list with first team honors.
The only independent team to advance to the playoffs, Florida Atlantic finished second with 10 players on the list behind Northern Colorado's 12 honorees. Allen, a quarterback from Edmond, OK, is ranked fourth in the nation with a 159.55 passing efficiency rating. Wide receiver Roosevelt Bynes and tight end Anthony Crissinger-Hill are tied with FAU's single season touchdown record with nine touchdowns this season.
The single defensive first team member, Quentin Swain, leads the team in total tackles with 90 and is five tackles ahead of second team member, Chris Laskowski. Along with 85 tackles, Laskowski has picked up two sacks, an interception and a fumble.
Willie Hughley, DB, rounds out the defensive players. A sophomore, Hughley has 68 tackles, five interceptions for 123 yards and a fumble recovery. His latest interception came against Northern Arizona when he ran the ball back 47 yards for a touchdown.
After returning from a torn ACL last season, running back Anthony Jackson picked up second team honors by averaging 5.3 yards per carry. In his junior campaign, he has gained 815 yards in 145 attempts to lead FAU's running game.
Offensive lineman, George Guffey picked up second team offensive honors. Guffey, a walk-on center from Orlando, FL has only allowed two sacks this season despite playing with his hand in a cast. Linemen, Ken Campos (Miami, FL) and Dave Richards (Delray Beach, FL) round out the FAU offense that is averaging 376 yards per game.
Florida Atlantic hosts Colgate University on Saturday in the semifinals of the I-AA playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm at Lockhart Stadium.
