BOCA RATON, FL -
Coach Howard Schnellenberger
On Allen Suber
He has big days against everybody. Almost 1,000 yards rushing, 1,400 yards passing, 14 touchdowns passing and nine running or something like that. I tallied that up and it is around 87.3 percent of their offense. We will not stop him but we have to slow him down. We have to keep him well under his average production. It would be nice to pull down a turnover or two. They are not nearly as susceptible as laying the ball on the ground as they have in the past. Suber is careful with the ball. He is a very, very, very good collegiate quarterback. I understand that sometimes they put him at halfback. I was praying that they would put him at halfback. I don't think he can throw it as well from halfback and if we know he is going to run it we have a chance to stop him, but when he spreads us out he gets us scattered all over the field and he can gain a lot of yards.
Comparing the 2002 team to the 2003 team.
If you go through the evolution of this football team it starts by five guys working their way to the top, five of our 10 offensive lineman working their way to the top and becoming the starters on this football team. Their condition and improved techniques and staying injury free is where it all starts. Now our quarterback is given adequate protection to do the things he can do so very well. Our running backs are now in a position to do the things that they can do so very well. That is generally why our team is better. Specifically, to get Roosevelt Bynes in here to give us another true great receiver and to get Anthony Crissinger-Hill back on the team along with Anthony Jackson back from injury, Doug Parker back on the squad and finally in condition and to have Harper and Sanchez healthy throughout the year. That coupled with a defense that is playing better has made a huge difference in our team from previous years.
Quarterback Jared Allen
On Bethune-Cookman
Bethune-Cookman looks good. They are running the stuff that we saw last year, same defense. It is going to be whoever comes out and executes. The big thing with us is recognizing who everybody is. One of their schemes is trying to confuse you, especially with their linebackers. If we get a hat on a hat we should be okay.
Playoff experience
Sure, it is the first round of the playoffs but I don't think it will hurt us. We know that we have to go out there and if we lose we are out and they know that as well. I don't think it will hurt us too bad. We know what is at stake.
It is an extension of the regular season. It is kind of cool how we are playing then now because we played them the first two seasons and we didn't get them in the regular season but we are getting them now. Emotions are going to be running high. Right now the series stands at 1-1 so it ends up being the best of three.
Preparation for postseason.
I imagine that practice will be the same format but a little more intense. It is exciting to know that we are one of the 16 teams still practicing in I-AA. It is something to feel good about. Everyone knows how important practices are.
On FAU's offense vs the "Wyatt Bone"
Our offense is more of a traditional offense; two backs, two receivers, and a tight end. We try to establish our running game and pass off of that which we have done this year, head and shoulders above what we have done in the past. In Coach Schnellenberger's offense you have to establish the running game, which sets up the pass. He isn't shy about passing either. In their offense, if I remember right, they will spread you out and run the option with one back or two backs. The quarterback will drop back and scramble. Allen Suber is a great athlete. He can either run it or throw it. He has a good arm. It will be interesting to see, it will be a battle for both defenses. Both of our offenses are pretty high powered. They scored 39 against FAMU.
Progression of the Offensive Line
Before the season we knew that if our offensive line came around then it would take us pretty far and that has proven true so far. They have done a great job. Playing together for this many games this season and last year it was tough but it was building for the future and we are starting to see that now.
Which is a bigger rivalry, B-CC or FIU
It is a little different in some ways but yet the same. Both are in-state rivals we have played both twice. Bethune is a little different because that is where we got our first win. We didn't play FIU that year. The Bethune rivalry is more historic. Their coach saying that that was the worst loss he has ever had and then they came to our place and came back in the fourth quarter the next year. The emotions are going to be there and there are players from both teams that have been there for all of the games.
Their defense got to me a little bit. Like I said they try to confuse you. What you have to do is point out their mike linebacker and backs and I got just got confused. They are both starting DB's for the Jaguars' now so I'm not feeling too bad. This year I am concentrating on recognizing everyone.
On his own improvement
I think I have improved in reading coverages and recognizing people. My arm is not super strong right now, it is the same. Decision wise I am much better. It goes along with experience. The B-CC game was the second game last season and then you have all of this season so that is a lot of football games. I think that is the biggest change, seeing defense after defense, game after game, situation after situation and evolving.
ON B-CC stadium
It was a dark and gloomy place. It was muddy and we pulled out a miraculous victory, I remember that. The weather didn't treat us too well. I have good memories from it just because we won.
Line backer Chris Laskowski
How do you stop B-CC's quarterback, Suber.
You hear it a lot, you can't stop him but you have to contain him, the guy is a weapon. I heard the FIU coach say this, that the best plays are broken plays. Our film last year was like that. He goes back there and scrambles and nobody is open but he just makes things happen. We have to get a lot of pressure on him and get him out of the pocket and tackle in the open field.
Tight end Anthony Crissinger-Hill
On practice
I think this will be the best week of practice for us yet. That is one thing that coach always tells us, that we have to practice how we want to play. If we go out and have a bad week of practice that is the worse thing for us. I feel that we need to have the best week of practice that we have ever had to get ready for this game.
Defensive Lineman Ramon Rickards
On stopping Suber
I missed about five sacks last year. He is pretty elusive. We are going to have to do our assignment and stay in our gaps. Don't deviate on what we have to do. If you deviate a little bit you will be gone. He is a fast kid. I am excited to play against him though.
Playoff experience
Experience might have a little to do with it but I think it will come down to who wants it more. I think we want it pretty bad.
