The weekly football press conference was held Wednesday afternoon. Joe Walker, Quentin Swain and Chris Shepherd were featured along with FAU head coach Howard Schnellenberger. Reporters were also given an opportunity to speak with Nicholls State Head Coach Daryl Daye.
Chris Shepherd, Jr, OL
Gaining Recognition
"We have always believed in ourselves. After playing together for three and in some cases four season, we now need to allow our experience to manifest itself. I hope it helps to build our fan base.
"One of the top reasons we are playing better is that we are jelling together. Everyone is doing their part, from the scout team on up. Everyone can now see what part their role plays in winning. It's a family trying to get better at the game of football week after week."
On Nicholls State
"It will be important for us to take care of all our "Ps" and "Qs", make the right decisions and that we understand our opponent. That is where film and the details of practice come in. By Saturday, I hope we have it all down and that we can leave it all on the field. It should be a hard fought game."
Quentin Swain, Sr, LB
Preparing for the option offense
"Last week we had to practice everything. Yesterday we concentrated on every individual doing their job, covering their spot. Experience should help keep us from running to the ball and to not forget our responsibilities. Nicholls plays hard and runs the ball."
Week-to-Week Preparation
"Film becomes important and we just try to soak up the information. Last week the team didn't run. This week the team predominately runs. It doesn't matter to me what style a team plays it just changes our assignments."
Coach Howard Schnellenberger
"We look forward to getting back into Lockhart Stadium to have another opportunity to play against a solid football team. It's a team that defeated us at their place in a monsoon, and it was one of the worse outings our team had. Our team is a year older and it will be a measuring stick to see if we have improved enough to measure up with Nicholls State's football team."
"Defense will be important in this game, going against the wishbone attack and a team that leads the nation in yardage gained. We will need to be really well prepared. But we are a different team now. We have a year more experience and the confidence that comes with winning. We will need to make them work for every thing they get, not allow them to throw the ball over our heads again and on offense we will need to stop the fumbles, stop the interceptions and try to control the ball."
"The team is looking at this game as a game that we will need to take every bit of our preparation and strength to win. We are not where I would like to be, but we are coming closer every week."
Nicholls State head coach Daryl Daye
"We are a team that has our backs to the wall and are road warriors. We have gotten on the winning ways and are excited about the opportunity to play the Owls. We won't talk too much about strategy, but obviously we plan to run the ball and to make it difficult on the opponent's defense.
"I see a program that is impressively moving fast to being a top-25 program and have accomplished beating a I-A school. We watch a lot of film and rate FAU's quarterback as one of the best in the country. The only person I think is better that I have seen is possibly Banks from USF, that includes other schools that we do not play, but have seen on film. I'm impressed with how the team has matured how they limit the turnovers and play physical."
