Dave Burgering was elected president of United States Diving at the 2002 United States Aquatic Sports (USAS) Annual Meeting Sept. 14 in Dallas, TX. Burgering's term begins immediately and extends through 2004.
Burgering has been at the helm of Florida Atlantic University's diving program since 1995 and the Coral Springs Diving Team since 1993. He has served as U.S. Diving Vice President of Senior Diving for the previous four years (1998-2002).
A 1980 Olympic team member, Burgering was the 1977 Big Ten Champion on 1-meter and 3-meter for Michigan State University and the 1983 Pan American Games bronze medallist. He was a two-time All-American and a member of the U.S. National Team from 1977-1984.
"I served on the board of directors as an athlete representative when I was diving competitively," Burgering said. "Even then, I always thought about becoming president. I've always wanted to give back in some way to the sport."
Burgering is a three-time National Independent Conference Coach of the Year. He has coached three USD junior national championship teams, won the 1989 U.S. Diving Age Group Coach of the Year award and served as team leader for the 1994 World Aquatic Championships and judge at the 1996 Olympic Trials and 2001 Goodwill Games.
Burgering resides in Boca Raton, FL with his wife Pam. They are the parents of two children, Chris and Alexandra Mantilla.
U.S. Diving is the national governing body for the sport of diving; headquartered in Indianapolis. Diving offers diversified programs geared toward the broadest number of diving enthusiasts, from the novice to the world champion. U.S. Diving conducts approximately 40 regional and national events annually, sanctions hundreds of events managed by its 350 member clubs and is responsible for training and selecting teams that represent the United States at international events such as the Olympic Games, World Championships and Pan American Games.
