A unanimous choice as the I-AA Independent Defensive Player-of-the-Week, Willie Hughley becomes the first Florida Atlantic University player to receive the honor this year. Hughley picks up the recognition after FAU defeated Florida International University 31-21 in the first annual Don Shula Classic on November 23, 2002.
Hughley, a sophomore defensive back from Miami, Florida, picked up five solo tackles, an interception and disrupted three passes. His three deflections set a new school record for deflections in a season with 11.
The 6'0" sophomore finished the season second on the team with 33 solo tackles and finished with 49 total tackles. He set a school record for interceptions and yards returned after picking off three passes and returning them for 147 yards.
