The Florida Atlantic University's baseball team held their first day of practice on Monday. The team will practice this week from 2:30-5:30 at FAU Stadium. Kevin Cooney begins his 15th season as the head coach for FAU and has compiled a 613-375-9 record.
After posting a 36-24 record in 2001, the team returns eight starters and two starting pitchers. With the playing experience gained from last season, the team hopes to improve on their third place finish in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and return to the NCAA tournament for the third time, in four seasons.
The 36-man squad consists of eight transfers and 21 upper-classmen. L.J. Biernbaum, a senior outfielder, returns to FAU after earning First-Team All-Conference in 2001. Two players were also honored last season as they earned Freshmen All-American Honorable Mention. Rusty Brown returns after posting a .256 batting average and driving in 28 runs. Chris Pillsbury received honors after pitching 55.1 innings and posting a 4-4 record.
The team will play their first game against Bethune-Cookman, 7 pm, February 1 in Boca Raton. FAU will then travel to UCLA for a three-game series. Other highlights on this years schedule include: 2001 National Champion Miami, top-25 Rutgers, top-40 teams UCF and Stetson, along with 2001 NCAA participants Minnesota and Tennessee.
