The Atlantic Sun Conference released the 2002 league baseball polls Wednesday, with the poll looking very similar to last year's final standings. One of two differences was Florida Atlantic University moving up a spot to number four as Campbell dropped to number five. FAU received two first place votes in the coaches poll.
The Preseason All-Conference team was also announced. Two Blue Wave players made the list. Danny Core, a junior pitcher from Pembroke Pines, donned conference honors for the first time in his career. The second year starter posted a 4.42 ERA and struck out 103 in 108 innings of work in 2001. L.J. Biernbaum earned honors as an outfielder after being named First-Team All-Conference in 2001 when he tallied a .326 average with 13 home runs and 54 RBI.
Florida Atlantic begins play on February 1, when they host Bethune-Cookman College. The Blue Wave return six position players and two starting pitchers to the 2002 squad. The team will also include eight transfers and notable freshmen Jeff Fiorentino and Derek Hutton. Fiorentino was named Broward County Player-of-the-Year, while Hutton took the same honor in Palm Beach County.
