JACKSONVILLE, AL -
The bats came alive for Florida Atlantic University (33-20, 13-11 TAAC) as they beat Jacksonville State University (11-36, 3-21 TAAC) in a Saturday doubleheader, 9-0 and 14-2. Every starter had a hit in both games for FAU.
Florida Atlantic got off to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Four singles, a hit batter and a Gamecock error led to the four runs. That was all FAU would need as the pitching staff shut down JSU's offense in the shutout. Bobby Spano went 4-for-4 in the game, while teammate Gabe Somarriba went 4-for-5.
Danny Core (5-8) pitched four innings, struck out two, walked one, and allowed only two hits. Matt O'Brien and James Callahan came in to pitch the fifth, giving up one hit apiece. Nelson Lopez pitched the final two innings and struck out two and gave up two hits. The shutout marks the second for the FAU this season.
Game two saw more of the same as every Florida Atlantic starter scored and had a hit. FAU put a run on the board in every inning but two. The Blue Wave outhit JSU 14-5 as Spano, Somarriba, and Rusty Brown each went 2-for-3. LJ Biernbaum topped off the afternoon with a two-run homer to left field, his 13th of the season.
Chris Pillsbury started the game for FAU, but was relieved after 3 2/3 innings of work. He gave up two earned runs on three walks and one strike out. Jim Cooney (3-0) earned the win for as he pitched 2 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball and struck out two. Travis NeSmith pitched the final inning and gave up only one hit.
Josh Nix (2-5) took the loss for JSU after pitching three innings and giving up four earned runs.
Florida Atlantic next hosts Mercer University on Friday and Saturday in the final series of the regular season.
