TAMPA - Florida Atlantic University's softball team defeated the University of Tennessee-Chatanooga and Mississippi State University, but fell to top-ten ranked Stanford University late Saturday night at the USF "Speedline Invitational." FAU improves to 20-8 on the season.
The Lady Owls opened the day with a 2-1 victory over UT-C in the final of the final game of the round-robin action. Nicole Myers who hit her fifth home run of the tournament in the fourth inning to give FAU a 2-1 advantage. Myers also earned her 11th victory of the season by throwing a complete game four hitter while striking out 14.
Moving into the single-elimination round of the tourna,ment, the Lady Owls faced Mississippi State and were victorous, 3-2. Freshman, Annie Norto belted a two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning to score callie Piper and Jaime Melton. She scored on the next play, a wild pitch. Starter Chris Stucliffe improved her record to 5-1 on the season. Sutcliffe pitched four innings, struck out two batters and gave up the two runs. Myers earned her first save of the season by closing out the last three innings and earning six strikeouts.
In the winner's bracket, FAU faced top-ten Standford, the team's third game of the season. Stanford won 2-0. Myers pitched a complete game six hitter and struckout nine. The Cardnels held FAU to two hits.
FAU will next play host ot Quinnipiac College 6 pm, Tuesday.
