ATLANTA, GA -
Florida Atlantic University fell to Georgia State University 80-72 Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, GA. The loss drops FAU to 1-10 in Trans America Athletic Conference play and 4-16 overall. Georgia State improved to 9-2 and 15-5, respectively. FAU was led by Tamala Vaughn who had 18 points while Georgia State's Alicia Doherty scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Lady Panthers.
Despite their best performance of the year from the field and outrebounding GSU, Florida Atlantic committed 25 turnovers and went 5-of-14 from the line in the second half in falling to the Lady Panthers. FAU shot 58 percent from the field compared to GSU's 43 percent. The Lady Owls also held a 36-28 edge on the boards.
GSU built a nine-point advantage midway through the first half before the Lady Owls came back with a 14-5 run to tie the game at 27. FAU trailed 37-35 at the half.
The Lady Owls started the second half on a 4-0 run to take a 39-37 lead. GSU countered to eventually take a 10 point lead. Trailing 70-59 with under five minutes to play, the Lady Owls went on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to six. That was as close as FAU would get as GSU's Marica Maddox hit two key threes late to preserve the GSU victory.
Along with Vaughn, three other Lady Owls finished in double-figures. Ruta Griniute had 12, while LaTorria Matthews and Chantale Jones each had 10. Vaughn led FAU with eight rebounds.
GSU played without Leslie McElrath, the TAAC's leading scorer, who missed the game due to illness.
