BOCA RATON, FL -
A 24-0 first half run helped lead Florida Atlantic University past visiting Jacksonville University 82-45 Thursday afternoon in Boca Raton. FAU's LaTorria Matthews led all scorers with 18 points, all in the first half, while Chantale Jones had 17 for the Lady Owls' effort. Yolisha Jackson led JU with 13 points. The win improved FAU to 2-10 in the Trans America Athletic Conference and 5-16 overall while JU fell to 10-11 overall and 6-6 in the TAAC. The loss snapped JU's six-game losing streak.
JU opened the game leading 4-0 with 18:25 left in the first half before FAU took control of the game with a 24-0 run over the next 8:10 to lead 24-4 with 10:15 left in the half. The run included four Matthews' treys and 13 points by the senior. With 1:25 left in the half, the game was delayed 31 minutes after a cheerleader fell during a routine being performed in a timeout. Ultimately, FAU led 44-22 at the break.
The Lady Owls opened up the second half outscoring JU 24-7 to lead 68-29 with 9:47 to go. The closest the Dolphins would get was within 29 points with 5:45 remaining.
For the game, FAU outshot JU 48-percent to 28 percent. FAU also held a 41-38 rebounding edge while forcing 29 JU turnovers. FAU went 9-of-18 (50 percent) from three-point range.
In addition to Matthews and Jones, FAU's DeeAnna Hanscom and Sumika Alexander finished in double figures with 12 points and 10 points, respectively. For Alexander, it was a career high. Matthews, who is already FAU's leader in treys, converted five times from beyond the arc to give her 202 for her career.
"This was a great effort by our team," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan. "We played with intensity right from the beginning and were able to take them out of their game. Holding them to 28 percent shooting and forcing 29 turnovers is evidence of how hard we played."
JU's 45 points were the fewest allowed by FAU in the Dugan era and the fewest overall in four seasons.
FAU next hosts Stetson Saturday at 3:00pm.
