ATLANTA, GA -
Raheim Brown set a Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament record with 9-for-9 shooting as he led the Owls to a 70-65 victory over Campbell University Wednesday night in first-round action at the Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament in Atlanta, GA. Brown finished with a career-high 20 points to lead the Owls into a quarterfinal match-up with top-seeded Georgia State. For Brown, it was the most field goals made in a TAAC Tournament game without a miss.
Campbell jumped out to an 11-point first half lead before the Owls battled back for a 38-32 lead at the break. FAU (7-23) increased the lead to 40-32 before the Camels came back with an 11-2 run to take a 43-42 lead. FAU then went on an 8-2 run that included two threes by Jeff Hamilton which gave the Owls a 50-45 lead, one in which Campbell (7-21) was unable to overcome the rest of the way. The Camels would pull to as close as three on two separate occasions late.
"Raheim carried our team tonight, and I am proud of the numbers he pulled," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "He showed guts and basically led us to the win despite the injury he's had to overcome."
Brown missed nine games in the middle of the season after surgery on his left knee in December.
In all, FAU outshot Campbell 49 percent to 39 percent. The Owls went 6-of-15 from beyond the arc while Campbell went just 1-of-9. FAU also limited Campbell's leading scorer, Adam Fellers, to 12 points and two field goals. Fellers had averaged 23 points against FAU in the previous four meetings between the two.
"We were doing our best to put a lock on Fellers because he has hurt us in the past," said Green.
Along with Brown, Jeff Cowans and Earnest Crumbley finished with 12 for the Owls. Cowans led FAU with a game-high and nine rebounds. It also tied a career-high for Cowans on the boards. FAU was able to hold on despite 12-of-27 shooting from the free throw line.
"This game was definitely a confidence-booster for us and will help prepare us to face Georgia State,' said Green. "I feel we have lots of improving to do, but we are heading that way. Anything can happen in the next game."
FAU next faces Georgia State Thursday at 6:00pm in a rematch of last year's quartefinal match-up between the two.
