ATLANTA, GA - Any hopes Florida Atlantic University had of upsetting top-seeded Georgia State in the quarterfinals of the Trans America Athletic Conference Thursday night went by the wayside as the host Panthers defeated the Owls 96-57 to advance to Friday's semifinals. GSU used a 23-2 run near the end of the first half to take control of the game.
FAU (7-24) was led by Raheim Brown, who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Daryl Dingle and Earnest Crumbley added 10. GSU (26-4) was led by Shernard Long's 18 points. Thomas Terrell added 15 and Darryl Cooper 12.
With GSU leading 19-15 with 9:07 left in the first half, the Panthers never looked back as they rolled off seven straight points to take a 26-15 lead with 7:04 left in the half. A Dingle jumper broke the run and pulled FAU to within seven before the Panthers strung together 16 straight points in the span of 4:49 to take a commanding 42-17 lead with 1:35 to go in the half. FAU would trail 42-21 at the break.
Despite pulling most of their starters midway through the second half, the Panthers continued to add to their advantage, which grew to as many as 40 with 4:06 left in the game.
In all, GSU held FAU to just 29 percent shooting while connecting on 53 percent of their shots. FAU managed 3-of-24 accuracy from beyond the arc.
The loss was FAU's seventh straight against the Panthers and kept GSU a perfect 8-0 against the Owls at the GSU Sports Arena.
