Florida Atlantic University was defeated by Gardner-Webb University 35-19 Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, NC. It was the third straight loss for the Owls as the fell to 3-5 on the season.
The Bulldogs took early control of the game by claiming a 14-0 lead just 5:49 into the first quarter. FAU came back with their first score in the second quarter on a 20 touchdown by pass by Garrett Jahn to Dantson Dareus. The Bulldogs added a field goal before the end of the half to lead 17-7 at the break.
Gardner-Webb (4-4) took a 25-7 lead less than a minute into the third quarter when William Andrews hauled in an 86-yard touchdown pass from Jeremy Martin that was followed by a two-point conversion. Less than three minutes later, Martin scored on a 6-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 32-7 lead.
The Owls fought back later in the third quarter when Anthony Jackson rushed for a 1-yard score that was followed by a 33-yard touchdown pass from Jahn to Thomas Parker. The Owls failed on both two-point tries and trailed 32-19 at the end of the third quarter.
Gadner-Webb tacked on a fourth quarter field goal to account for the last of the day's scoring.
In the loss, FAU's Thomas Parker had a season and career-high 113 yards on seven receptions. Allen went 6-of-16 for 110 yards while Jahn was 8-of-15 for 109 yards while throwing for two touchdowns and having one pass intercepted.
Defensively, Kinyumba Mutakabbir had 15 tackles to lead Florida Atlantic. Todd Poitier had 14 while Lee Pasick and Chris Laskowski added 12 and 11, respectively.
In all, FAU was outgained 561 yards to 237.
The game featured a scary moment late in the first half when FAU's Taurian Osborne did not get up after assisting on a tackle. The game was delayed several minutes while he was stabilized and taken to a nearby hospital. After a series of precautionary tests, Osborne was released Saturday evening from the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after suffering a spinal contusion. His status will be re-evaluated upon his return to Boca Raton. FAU's Tremaine Johnson was also injured on the same play and did not return to the game due to dizziness.
The Owls next host Eastern Illinois November 10 at 4:00pm at Pro Player Stadium.
