STONE MOUNTAIN, GA -
Florida Atlantic University's Martin Jirak defeated South Alabama's Zlatko Stupausky Sunday morning, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to advance to the final round of the prequalifying tournament at the ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, GA. Jirak is one of five FAU men's tennis players to take part in the annual competition that features the top NCAA Division I players.
Jirak has won four matches in the tournament's first three days. The senior opened play Friday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marquette's Raj Gill before defeating Tony Mule of UNC-Greensboro 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Jirak followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Virginia Tech's Andreas Lauland on Saturday.
Of the 256 players that began the prequalifying tournament, Jirak is one of just 16 that remain. He will face Wisconsin's Alexander Kasarov Monday morning with the winner advancing to qualifying rounds beginning Tuesday. Eight players from the prequalifying rounds will join 48 seeded players in the qualifying rounds.
Meanwhile, FAU's Doug Devriendt defeated Gabe Coren (San Diego State) 6-2, 6-2 and Eduardo Pacheco (Arkansas) 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 before falling in the third round. In other Owls' action, Derrick Nguyen (UCLA) d. Andre Buzzoni (FAU) 6-2, 7-6, Ben Cox (Michigan) d. Sandro Spotti (FAU) 6-1, 7-6, and Trevor Wilson (Georgia Tech) d. Cristian Paiz (FAU) 3-1, ret. All were first round matches.
In doubles action, FAU's team of Buzzoni and Spotti fell to Aleksey Bubis/Oggie Kolev (Arkansas) 8-1.
The ITA All-American Championships is one of three national collegiate tennis championships of the season.
Jirak is one of six players that return from last year's team that won its first Atlantic Sun Championship. The Owls finished the season ranked no. 52 nationally while advancing to its second straight NCAA Tournament.
