High school all-star games are being played this weekend in virtually every county, and hundreds of NCAA head coaches and their scouting staffs are swarming across fertile football fields throughout Florida. More than 240 premier seniors are demonstrating their talents in front of a collection of most interested scouts who represent nearly every team east of the Mississippi River.
Late observations made this weekend will solidify the desirability of each senior. The first official time that a player is able to sign his allegiance to a particular university is 8 o'clock a.m. on February 2, 2000. Yet, by the time Signing Day rolls around, most players will have made their selection.
The carpetbaggers who have come south see a new face in the crowd, FAU's skeleton coaching staff. While in our first year of recruiting and recruiting for a yet to be established team, our coaches already find themselves in the enviable position of competing with the likes of Illinois, West Virginia, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Louisville and a host of other Division I universities.
Each of these established Division I programs could have as many as 10 to 12 unofficial commitments in hand by this time. (It's been reported on the Internet by an unsubstantiated source that, prior to the season, Joe Paterno's Penn State touted a full complement of 25 commitments.)
As expected by insiders and coming as a surprise to others, eight young Floridians who in years past would have flown off to distant northern lands in search of scholarships to play football have already elected to share the dream and become a viable force in developing FAU's program. Other young men will step forward this weekend during their official visit, still others will join later.
In years to come, FAU will attempt to sign a full complement of 30 players on Signing Day. This initial year about 20 students will sign with us, and we'll hold 10 scholarships for walks ons and transfers. Forced to leave the state and join conference teams in the Big Ten, South East and others, disillusioned hometown heroes may seek repatriation back home. They just might choose to play an integral part in FAU Football's growth, development and success.
It's become clear that our initial class will have a quality unmatched by any Division I-AA team. This quality will ensure our ability to stay in the fast lane and maintain the unusual progress that's consistent with our ambitious timetable. FAU Football will be nationally competitive by the Year 2008 (or sooner).
It won't be long before our coaches find themselves in the enviable position of competing with the likes of the University of Miami and those other guys.
