Twenty-four signees and 100 walk ons will arrive on campus in seven weeks, so it's time to fill out our auxiliary staff to oversee the orderly development of FAU's full-fledged program by August 2001. To be frugal in the use of the funds generously made available by Founders and Owl Fund Members, positions will be filled on a first need basis.
We've appointed an experienced equipment manager to oversee blocking sleds, dummies, nets, tackle backs, and everything seen on the practice field. Committed to protection of players, the equipment manager's distribution system will allow him to fit every player starting with the helmet and hip and shoulder pads. He'll be in charge of equipment cleaning, repair and maintenance, team travel, preparation of game sites at Davie and Jupiter, and, security and upkeep of the Tom Oxley training facility and fields.
Next in turn will be the trainer who will complete physicals for players and coaches. With hundreds of miles of adhesive, he'll tape every ankle, wrist, knee, thumb, finger, and shoulder. The training staff must prepare the entire 100-man team for each practice of each day. He is the doctor's designee for medical and preventive treatment. Keeping the coaches appraised of the players' medical condition is paramount.
The strength coach will be responsible for the team's physical development. He'll evaluate and set a baseline for each player's strengths and deficiencies. Tailor-made programs will be designed to develop maximum strength and build muscle mass. The strength coach will work with assistant coaches to condition both body and mind.
Our ticket manager will have a thorough understanding of marketing in the FAU Territory. She'll coordinate booster priorities with prescribed seats. Working closely with the sales and marketing department, ticket sales will be maximized by direct advertising and visibility created by coaches' radio and television shows. She'll optimize the use of local and star players, as well as our championship coaching staff. The ticket manager will oversee a $3-6 million ticket operation and be responsible for accounting down to the penny.
We'll look for a sports information director who has worked both at the developing and championship levels. This person will be more than a good writer-a prolific one. The director will be responsible for national, state, and local media, daily team releases, media guides, team bios and articles, requests for coaches and players at press conferences, and, all game day operations.
As builders are laying the last blocks on the Tom Oxley Athletic Center, we're just beginning to put into place the human building blocks for a championship program.
