For the second time in FAU's past three games, a Lady Owl surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career, but for the fourth consecutive time, Florida Atlantic ended up on the losing end in an 81-56 Saturday afternoon loss to visiting Georgia State at FAU Gymnasium. The loss drops FAU to 4-14 overall and 1-8 in Trans America Athletic Conference play.
While the day belonged to GSU, the biggest moment belonged to FAU's Tamala Vaughn, whose team-leading 13 points gives her 1,001 for her career and makes her the sixth Lady Owl to accomplish the feat. Her teammate, and fellow senior, LaTorria Matthews became the fifth such player a week earlier in Jacksonville. Officially, Vaughn broke the barrier with 11:10 left in the game and at the same time the Lady Panthers were in the midst of taking control of the contest.
FAU, fresh off of its near-upset of TAAC-leading Campbell two nights earlier fell behind early and went to the half trailing 36-27. The Lady Owls opened the second half on a 14-7 run to close to within 43-41 with 16:21 remaining and seemed poised to take GSU (4-14, 1-8) down to the wire. Instead, the Lady Panthers took firm control of the game, outscoring FAU 38-14 the rest of the way.
Julie Goad was the only other Lady Owl in double figures with 11 points. Vaughn led FAU with five rebounds.
GSU outshot FAU 43 percent to 30 percent while outrebounding the Lady Owls 56-44. FAU's Matthews finished with nine points while Ruta Griniute finished with five points, four rebounds, and five blocks.
GSU was led by Evita Rogers with 24 points. Leslie McElrath had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
