A season-high 23 points by Tamala Vaughn were not enough as Florida Atlantic University fell to Campbell University 84-71 Thursday night in Buies Creek, NC. The loss drops FAU to 4-15 overall and 1-9 in Trans America Athletic Conference play. The win improves Campbell to 14-4 overall and 10-0 in the TAAC while extending the Lady Camels' winning streak to 10 games.
FAU was forced to play catch-up most of the night, falling behind 25-13 with 8:39 left in the first half. The Lady Owls then went on a 15-7 run over the next 6:17 to trail just 32-28 with 2:22 left in the half. Campbell led 36-30 at the half. FAU's Shayla Thompson, a freshman, scored 10 of her career-high 16 points in the first half as she finished with a team-high seven rebounds as well.
FAU opened the second half on an 10-2 run to take a short-lived 40-38 lead with 16:36 to play. The Lady Camels fought back with a 16-4 run to take a 54-44 lead with 12:28 remaining. The closest FAU would get to Campbell the rest of the way was seven points back with 7:07 left.
The loss overshadowed Vaughn's performance as the senior scored 19 of her points in the second half. Her 10 field goals tied a career high set on two previous occasions. Her 23 points was a season-high for FAU. Thompson, who saw a season-high 32 minutes of action, went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. For the first time this season, FAU was playing without freshman Julie Goad, who will miss at least six weeks due to a stress fracture in her right foot.
LaTorria Matthews also finished in double figures with 12 points for the Lady Owls. For the game, FAU was outshot 52-percent to 40-percent. The Lady Owls were 6-of-19 from beyond the arc while Campbell went 6-of-10. The Lady Camels also held the edge at the free throw line, going 18-of-22 while FAU went 9-of-15.
For Campbell, Janice Washington finished with a team-high 16 points while Stacey Hinkle managed 13. The Lady Camels built as much as a 14-point lead late in the game before finishing with the 13-point victory.
