Riley Boulden joined the Florida Atlantic University swimming and diving coaching staff in the summer of 2017 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. He is approaching his third season in this role and eighth overall as a coach at the collegiate level. Boulden has been an invaluable member of the coaching staff, leading FAU’s recruiting efforts to new heights, as well as overseeing the sprint group.
At the 2019 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Swimming & Diving Championships, the men’s team finished as the conference runner-up, which became the best finish in the last 20 years of the program. This second place finish was an improvement from finishing fourth in the previous two years. On the women’s side, the team increased their placing at the Conference USA Championship from sixth to fifth in two years. Sprint freestyler and breaststroker Fatimah Westbrook received the 2019 C-USA Newcomer of the Year title and was awarded the C-USA Swimmer of the Week during the season.
At the 2018 C-USA Championship, Boulden led Abby Marshall to a silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke, which resulted in her breaking a 12-year school record. Marshall’s finish also was an NCAA B-cut time.
Before his time at FAU, Boulden spent three years as a men's and women's swimming and diving assistant coach at the United States Military Academy. Throughout his tenure at West Point, Boulden coached, mentored and developed the middle distance group. Both the men’s and women’s teams finished the season No. 2 at the Patriot League Championships, which were the highest simultaneous finishes in program history.
During the 2016-17 season, Boulden was named the head recruiting coordinator at West Point after spending his first two seasons as the junior recruiting coordinator. Boulden produced 2015, 2016 and 2017 “Most Improved” swimmers and saw 60 school records broken. He also served as an Olympic Trials Coach in 2016 and coached Joe Daniels to qualify for the World Class Athlete Program at Army.
Prior to his time at West Point, Boulden spent two years as the assistant men's swim coach and associate aquatics director at DePauw University. While at DePauw from 2012-14, he helped lead the team to two top-three finishes at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships and two top-15 finishes at the Division III NCAA Championships. The Tigers swim program boasted 13 broken school records and 18 All-American honors under Boulden's leadership.
Before beginning his collegiate coaching career at DePauw, Boulden was a decorated member of the University of Alabama swimming and diving team from 2006-2010. While a part of the Crimson Tide, he set a school record in the 200 IM and achieved two Olympic Trials cuts and four World Trials cuts.
Boulden finished fourth in the 200 breaststroke at the 2010 Southeastern Conference Championships and placed 19th in the same event at the World Trials. He also captured a sixth-place finish as part of the 400 medley relay at the World Trials. Three of his four seasons, Boulden was named to the SEC Honor Roll and was voted Alabama's team captain in 2010.
The Indianapolis native earned a bachelor’s in commerce and business administration from Alabama in 2010 and is currently working toward achieving his master’s in sport and recreation management from Indiana State. Boulden is a USA Swimming certified coach.
