IRVING, Texas – For the second straight week, Florida Atlantic women's soccer earned three weekly awards by the American Conference, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.
The Owls posted a 3-0 clean sheet victory at home Thursday over Jacksonville, and traveled across the state for a grueling 3-3 draw with Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. For their collective efforts,
Hailey Santiago is American Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week, and
Lola Hathorne earns Freshman of the Week honors consecutively as well. Additionally, Hathorne was selected as the league's latest Midfielder of the Week.
"We are excited for Hailey and Lola to receive back-to-back weeks of American Conference recognition," said Head Coach
Patrick Baker. "Both have had two very productive weeks. With the team success comes individual recognition, and this is a by-product of how the team has been performing. These two are creating a special bond on the field and it's showing early this season."
On Thursday against JU, Santiago recorded her second hat trick in a week's time – setting a new record for the shortest time between hat tricks in program history. All three of her tallies came in the second half, and those were the only three scores of the night. She added an assist in Sunday's 3-3 tie against FGCU, and currently leads the conference in goals (seven), game-winning goals (two) and points (16).
"It's an honor to be named Offensive Player of the Week, but I know this award reflects the work our whole team has put in," said Santiago. "I'm proud of my performance, and I'm excited to keep building on it and helping us compete!"
Hathorne found her name all over the box score during the Owls' 1-0-1 week. She recorded her team-high third assist, on what was the game-winning goal, in Thursday's win. Then in Sunday's road draw, she fired in two long-distance goals on her only two shots of the afternoon. The freshman midfielder now has three goals and three assists in her first seven collegiate matches.
"I am extremely grateful for this recognition," said Hathorne. "I thank God for the many ways He has guided me and provided for me throughout this new season. Although I receive this award, none of it is possible without my team. The hard work and support that everyone has shown on and off the field has been phenomenal. This award merely shows what we're capable of and I'm excited to see how we continue to grow throughout this season."
The Owls' three-match road trip continues with two contests this week: Thursday, Sept. 10 against North Dakota State in Fargo, and then north to Grand Forks to take on North Dakota the following Sunday, Sept. 13.
