BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Florida Atlantic women's soccer team saw its record in the American Conference even up after Thursday night's 1-0 loss to UAB on PNC Field.
The Owls' (3-4-4, 1-1-0) first conference road matchup of the season, against the Blazers (4-5-1, 1-1-0), was scoreless for nearly 70 minutes until the home team got the only score of the night.
THE TURNING POINT
After a first half where neither team found the back of the net, the Owls' best look was their first shot on goal of the night. In the 61st minute,
Hailey Santiago took control of a counter and turned it into a 2-on-1 breakaway. Her cross to
Amelia Hillman was perfectly placed, but UAB's oncoming goalkeeper made a splayed save to deny the Owls' opportunity.
THE FINISH
Owls' goalkeeper
Lily Holden did her part in keeping it scoreless on the other side of the scoreboard, with four of her nine saves coming in the first 25 minutes of the second half. That was until a 50/50 ball in the box was headed up and over her, with 20:05 left, breaking the stalemate, which the Blazers rode out for the remainder.
NOTABLES
- Holden posted a career-high nine saves. She nearly equaled her previous best of six with five in the first half alone.
- Hillman's attempt ended up being FAU's only shot on goal, among six team attempts.
- Seven Owls played 70 minutes or more, led by four staying on the pitch for all 90': Holden, Sydney Neira, Hailey Santiago and Cicely-Ann Spencer-Wickham.
