TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (24-23, 10-11) dropped the series finale to South Florida (29-18, 8-13) on Sunday by an 11-6 final. The Owls remain tied for fifth in the American Conference with six league games remaining.
THE BEGINNING
For the third consecutive day, the Owls scored first.
Marshall Lipsey led off the game with a triple and crossed home on a
Nick Romano sacrifice fly. Lipsey made it 2-0 with an RBI single in the second inning, and
Brett Patten added one more run with a bloop single in the third that drove in
Ian Collier.
THE TURNING POINT
USF chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the third. Each team's respective bullpen took over from that point forward.
Brayden Gilson carried the Owls from the fourth through the sixth inning, protecting the one-run lead.
The Bulls finally broke through in the seventh. Two singles and an FAU error loaded the bases, and a hit batter forced in the tying run. A two-run single followed, before the fourth run of the inning scored on a groundout double play. The Owls exited the inning trailing 6-3.
THE FINISH
Patrick Ward drove in Patten with a two-out hit in the eighth to make it 6-4, but USF broke the game open with another five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Owls scored two consolation runs in the ninth, but the comeback attempt ended there.
THE BATS
- The Owls out-hit the Bulls 12-11.
- Patten led the way, finishing 3-for-5 with two RBI.
- Both of Collier's hits were doubles.
- John Martinez singled to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
THE ARMS
- Dalton Robinson made the start and allowed one run on two hits in two innings.
- Gilson's final line included three runs allowed in four innings, only one of which was earned.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Owls return home for a midweek matchup with UCF on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
