BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior
Madison Inscoe entered as a pinch hitter and launched the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Florida Atlantic softball team a 3-2 victory over UAB on Friday night.
The Owls (33-18, 14-12) clinched the series win over the Blazers (20-32, 7-19) in walk-off fashion after a defensive battle.
FAU was led by senior pitching duo
Jaden Martinez and
Ainsley Lambert, who each allowed just one run. Lambert earns the win, her third of the year.
THE BEGINNING
The first two Owl batters reached base, scoring later in the inning off a two-run single by senior first baseman
Yani Guzman for the 2-0 lead.
Martinez delivered early in the circle with two strikeouts to retire the side in the top of the second.
THE TURNING POINT
After a run by the Blazers in the third, hits became hard to come by for both teams. The Owls leaned on their defense to take care of business, led by sophomore shortstop
Hannah Rivers with yet another highlight diving grab to record the inning-ending out in the top of the third. Guzman later turned in an unassisted double play to put UAB away in the fourth.
The Owls tallied back-to-back hits in the bottom of the fifth, but both base runners were left stranded. The Blazers soon tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth off a solo home run.
THE FINISH
UAB went hitless the rest of the way, giving Florida Atlantic its opportunity in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore
Lily Holtje got the frame started with a leadoff single up the middle. Freshman
Lily Lowery checked in to run the bases and Inscoe entered off the bench to take the next at-bat. The double was just deep enough for the speedy Lowery to round the bases and cross home plate in time for the 3-2 win..
