BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball dropped the season series finale with Miami on Wednesday night by a 5-4 final. The Owls (19-21) will look to bounce back this weekend when they host Charlotte in American Conference play.
THE BEGINNING
The Hurricanes (30-11) were first out of the gate, scoring a run in the first inning and two in the second to lead 3-0. The Owls tied the game in the fourth. Two walks sandwiched around an
Eli Small single loaded the bases.
Brando Leroux drew a four-pitch walk to bring in the first run.
Marshall Lipsey hit a chopper to the second baseman, who could not handle it. The ball caromed into right field, allowing two runs to score.
THE TURNING POINT
Florida Atlantic grabbed its first lead of the night in the fifth inning. After a one-out double by
John Martinez, Small lined a single up the middle to make it 4-3.
FAU relievers
Brayden Gilson,
Carson Kimball, and
Reilly Witmer held Miami without a hit from the fourth through the seventh inning. The Hurricanes finally tagged
Tyler Murphy for an infield single to start the eighth, followed by a base hit to right field to put runners at the corners. Murphy induced a ground ball for a double play, but the tying run scored on the play.
Murphy went back out for the ninth and walked the leadoff hitter. Another base hit put runners at the corners for the second straight inning.
Zach Kilby entered and struck out pinch-hitter Daniel Cuvet, but Miami executed a squeeze bunt with the next batter to bring in the go-ahead run.
THE FINISH
The Owls needed a rally to tie the game again in the bottom of the ninth, but they were retired in order.
THE BATS
- Lipsey, Small, and Nick Romano combined for six of the Owls' seven hits.
- Martinez's double was his 11th of the season, which leads the team.
THE ARMS
- Gilson was first out of the bullpen after Brody Juntunen started. Gilson allowed three hits but no runs in 1.2 innings.
- Kimball walked two in two hitless, scoreless frames.
- Witmer retired all six batters he faced, including two strikeouts.
