MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Florida Atlantic baseball (16-17, 3-7 American) scored early and never let up on Friday night in a 17-4, seven-inning victory over Memphis (10-22, 3-7 American). The Owls racked up 16 hits from nine different players for their most lopsided win of the season so far.
THE BEGINNING
Three runs crossed the plate in the top of the first before an out was recorded. An
Ian Collier RBI single opened the scoring.
Brett Patten followed with a two-run double. After
Eli Small made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly, freshman
Jonathan Lopez connected for a two-run home run, the first of his career, to stake the Owls to a 6-0 lead after a half-inning.
Small and
TJ Gramesty logged run-scoring singles in the second, sandwiched around a bases-loaded walk drawn by Lopez, to make it 9-0. Collier doubled home a run in the third and scored on a single up the middle by
John Martinez.
THE FINISH
Memphis chipped away with a run in the third and two in the fourth, but the Owls kept their foot on the gas and delivered the final knockout blow in the sixth. After loading the bases without a hit, Martinez lined a bases-clearing three-run double down the left field line.
Jayden Harriel delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh to make it 17-3. Memphis scored a consolation run in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Owls completed the run-rule victory.
