BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (13-9, 0-1) started its American Conference schedule with a 4-1 defeat to UTSA (16-5, 1-0) on Friday night. The Owls were held to four hits. They'll look to even the series in game two on Saturday.
THE BEGINNING
UTSA scored on a two-out single in the first inning, but sophomore starter
James Litman settled in and gave the Owls five solid innings. He retired the Roadrunners in order in the second and third innings and stranded a runner in scoring position in the fourth. UTSA scored on a sac fly to make it 2-0 in the fifth.
On the other side, the FAU offense didn't record its first hit until the fourth.
Michael Perazza cut the deficit in half in the sixth with a leadoff, solo home run.
THE TURNING POINT
The Owls made a pair of throwing errors in the top of the seventh to aid in UTSA restoring its two-run lead. The Roadrunners added an insurance tally in the eighth to lead 4-1.
THE FINISH
After Perazza's homer in the sixth, a
Brando Leroux infield single in the seventh accounted for the Owls' final hit of the night.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
"We had chances, but it seemed like anytime we put runners on, the bad at-bat rears its ugly head. We need to just take a step back and relax. Don't try to do too much. We want to win so badly that we try to do too much."
