BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (14-9, 1-1) evened the weekend series with UTSA (16-7, 1-1) on Saturday, slipping by the Roadrunners for a hard-fought 7-6 victory. Sunday's finale will determine who exits the first American Conference weekend with a 2-1 record in league play.
THE BEGINNING
UTSA jumped in front with a two-run home run in the top of the first, but the Owls responded with three in the bottom of the inning. After a pair of walks,
Patrick Ward lined a two-out, two-RBI double down the right field line to tie the game.
Brett Patten followed with a base hit to put the home side ahead by a run.
Michael Perazza and
Kyle Boylston chipped in RBI singles in the second and fourth innings to put the Owls up 5-2.
THE TURNING POINT
Redshirt sophomore starter
Kide Adetuyi put together another stellar start for Florida Atlantic. After the home run in the first inning and a double by the next batter, Adetuyi did not allow another hit. He departed after five, and the Roadrunners jumped on the FAU bullpen. A walk and three doubles in the sixth added up to a four-run frame to put UTSA back on top 6-5.
The Owls tied the game again in the ensuing half inning.
TJ Gramesty led off with his second double of the game and eventually came home on a ground ball to short off the bat of Boylston.
UTSA loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh before fifth-year senior
Bryan Boully entered and slammed the door. A strikeout, a force-out at home, and a ground ball to short ended the threat with the game still tied.
THE FINISH
The Roadrunners had another chance to take the lead in the eighth. With a runner on first and one out, Boully had to be removed from the game due to injury. Freshman
Brody Juntunen came on and retired UTSA's Lane Haworth on one pitch. The Owls went back to the bullpen for the next hitter, and
Carson Kimball followed suit, inducing a groundout to third base to once again maintain the tie.
The Owls took a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the eighth after Patten led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
Kimball remained on the for the ninth and set the Roadrunners down in order, picking up two strikeouts along the way to seal the victory.
