BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic's softball team wrapped up the final day of the Joan Joyce Classic with a 5-1 victory over UMass on Sunday morning.
The Owls (12-5) remain undefeated at home and finished with a 6-0 record in the tournament on Joan Joyce Field at FAU Softball Stadium, outscoring opponents 42-9 over the four days.
Freshman pitcher Makenna Lee made the start in the circle and allowed one run in two innings before making way for her classmate Ashlynn Durkin, who picked up the first win of her collegiate career.
THE BEGINNING
In the opening frame, the Minutewomen (6-9) opened the game with a solo home run. After giving up a single in the top of the second, the Owls proceeded to hold the offense hitless for the next four innings.
Junior outfielder Kiley Shelton got FAU's bats rolling with a base hit in the bottom of the second before being left on base.
THE TURNING POINT
The Owls took the lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to six straight batters reaching base. Sophomore outfielder Bella Foran led off the frame with a single, followed by a double from redshirt junior outfielder Kylie Hammonds. On the next at-bat, redshirt senior shortstop McKenna Mulholland had a hard-hit ball to the shortstop that allowed both runners to score for a 2-1 lead.
A bunt from senior first baseman Yani Guzman led to a Mulholland run before the inning ended with the Owls up 3-1.
THE FINISH
In the bottom of the fourth, the Owls loaded the bases and tacked on another run off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Lily Holtje. Two straight walks later, FAU went up 5-1.
Durkin and graduate pitcher Ainsley Lambert finished the job, with the former not allowing a hit and the latter striking out three batters in two innings.
