5/3/2025 11:08:00 PM | Softball
In the opening game, the Owls (43-9, 22-4) were led by sophomore shortstop Kiley Channell setting the single-game program record with five hits. Martinez then retired all 21 Golden Hurricane (20-31, 8-18) batters for FAU's first perfect game since 2002 and second no-hitter of the season.
FAU responded with five hits and a walk for three runs in the top of the second, leading off with two straight doubles from first baseman Bella Cimino and sophomore Kiley Shelton. Redshirt sophomore outfielder Kylie Hammonds added a triple to right center, scoring on the next at-bat from Channell to up the score to 5-1.
The Owls tacked on two more runs in the third with Channell bringing home back-to-back leadoff walks with a double for a 7-2 lead. After a scoreless fourth inning, sophomore Kiley Shelton launched a solo shot to right field to lead off the fifth. Channell then drove in her fourth run of the day with her fourth hit for the 9-2 advantage.
Shelton added her second solo homer of the day to the same right field spot in the seventh, followed up by Channell's record-breaking hit that brought home another. Johns' two RBI double concluded the four-run inning for the 13-2 win.
The Owls' offense found their runs off two singles from junior catcher Chloe Yeatts, and one from sophomore Ciara Gibson as well as Cimino.
With two outs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, a ball to Martinez was deflected to Johns, who threw out the runner at first just in time to secure the history-making victory.
