BOCA RATON, Fla. – After a four-hit day from Jesiana Mora and 12 combined strikeouts from the pitching staff, the No. 25 Florida Atlantic softball achieved the series victory over Memphis with a 7-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
In their 40th win of the season, the Owls (40-9, 19-4) got off to a strong start offensively with four runs in the bottom of the first as the defense held the Tigers (17-32, 4-19) scoreless for the first six innings.
Junior pitcher Jaden Martinez made the start in the circle and tossed five strikeouts in three innings before making way for the nation's top closer in senior Ainsley Lambert, who picked up the win with seven of her own to move to 7-1 on the season.
Later in the inning, sophomore right fielder Ciara Gibson launched a no-doubt shot to right field for the two-run homer, her fifth of the season, and a 4-0 advantage.
Martinez checked out in the top of the fourth after allowing just two hits in three innings. Lambert entered with instant impact, striking out the side.
The Owls offense responded in the bottom frame, crossing home plate twice thanks to a single from junior catch Chloe Yeatts. Lambert then recorded her second one-two-three inning of strikeouts to retire the Tigers and finish the afternoon.
