BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 24 Florida Atlantic softball team is back in Paradise to host four games in the upcoming week. First up is a matchup against Toledo on Wednesday, Mar. 5 in the final tune-up before American Athletic Conference play. Set to begin at 6 p.m., the game will air on FAUSports.com.
The Owls (20-4) are tied for the third most victories in the nation, most recently winning five games in a four-day stretch in their first out-of-state road trip of the season, where they outscored their opponents 47-13.
Wednesday's matchup is sponsored by Prestige Windows and Doors.
The Owls went 5-1 in the state of Tennessee over the weekend,participating in the three-day Governors Invitational at Austin Peay before a single-game matchup against Middle Tennessee on Monday.
Game 1 – Florida Atlantic 10, Morehead State 3
Florida Atlantic played two on the opening day of the Governors Invitational, taking on Morehead State in the morning. The Owls scored 10 unanswered runs, led by freshman
Destiny Johns with 4 RBI off a double and a single.
Game 2 – Florida Atlantic 11, Northern Kentucky 2
Johns followed up her strong performance in the morning slot by completing the single-day cycle in the afternoon with a home run and triple to go with the four RBI. The fourth inning saw the Owls launch three homers, with a three-run shot from Johns followed by one from sophomore
Ciara Gibson and finally junior
Chloe Yeatts. Florida Atlantic needed only five innings for the run-rule victory.
Game 3 – Florida Atlantic 10, Northern Kentucky 2
The Owls achieved their second straight run-rule win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday morning. Johns came up just a home run short of the cycle while adding four RBI for the third straight game. Junior pitcher
Autumn Courtney delivered eight strikeouts in just 4.1 innings of work for the win.
Game 4 – Austin Peay 5, Florida Atlantic 3
FAU dropped its only game of the weekend against an Austin Peay team that has won 14 straight. The Owls battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to cut it to a one-run game in the fifth inning before giving up one more late run.
Game 5 – Florida Atlantic 9, Morehead State 0
Florida Atlantic was back to work on Sunday morning, securing its third run-rule win in five games. Junior pitcher
Jaden Martinez had a career-high 11 strikeouts in five innings of work
Game 6 – Florida Atlantic 4, Middle Tennessee 3
The Owls concluded their road trip with a narrow 4-3 victory over the Blue Raiders. All four runs came in the top of the third inning with back-to-back hits from Johns and Yeatts. Johns finished her stretch in Tennessee with 15 RBI. Courtney made her third start of the weekend and delivered 11 punchouts, her third double-digit strikeout game this season.
- The Owls are led by Head Coach Jordan Clark in her third season at the helm of the program with a record of 96-40.
- Florida Atlantic is tied for the third most wins in the nation with 20.
- Johns received a weekly honorable mention from the AAC and was named D1Softball's Freshman of the Week.
- Another freshman phenom, OF Bella Foran, is ranked sixth nationwide in hits (34) and is 41st in batting average (.479)
- The Owls rank in a tie for fourth in the nation in hits (209), 20th in total runs (150) and 24th in RBI (131).
- Senior relief pitcher Ainsley Lambert leads the NCAA in saves with six.
- Courtney is 10th nationally in strikeouts (78). She has 10 victories on the season, tied for third
- Florida Atlantic moved up to No. 24 in the NFCA Coaches Poll.
The Owls begin their second season of AAC play when they host Wichita State from Friday, Mar. 7 to Sunday, Mar. 9. Friday's game begins at 6 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
