No. 70 Men’s Tennis Wins on the Road
3/29/2025 4:54:00 PM | Men's Tennis
CHARLOTTE, N. C. – The No. 70 Florida Atlantic men's tennis team concluded a two-match road swing, in as many days, with a 5-2 win over fellow American Athletic Conference member Charlotte, on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the Owls youth, the team avenged last April's 4-3 loss to Charlotte at the 2024 AAC Championship and improved the all-time series, led by the 49ers, to 5-4.
The match started uncharacteristically for the Owls, who narrowly dropped the doubles point. Singles play followed for an FAU team that has won eight of its last nine and improved their record to 9-8 on the season while Charlotte fell to 9-9.
Florida Atlantic picked up wins on courts two through six with freshman Jany Kusy clinching the contest on court five. While Kusy orchestrated a come-from-behind win that clinched the match, graduate student Jiri Jenicek was battling in a three-set match on court three. Jenicek, who played in just his third match of 2025 after suffering a winter injury, was the final Owl to finish and did so with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(7-2) court three win to give FAU the 5-2 final.
Freshman Segundo Goity Zapico also had a memorable match with 6-3, 6-2 court four win making the Argentinian the first to record 20 wins on the season at 20-12. He is also the first Owl to record double-digit dual wins and moved to 11-7 in dual match play.
FAU will continue to play AAC members in non-conference competition with a Friday, April 4, 2025, match at Memphis. The contest is the final regular-season match for FAU and is scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT.
"It's always nice to get a win over a conference team. Kudos to Segundo, Mark [Havlicek], and Simon [Myslivec] for taking care of business and getting off the court quickly. They were calm and poised in the tough points.
It is nice to see Jiri back on the court after being out with a wrist injury for a few months. He continues to get better and better."
