BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 24 Florida Atlantic softball team played a doubleheader against UAB on Friday afternoon, earning the 4-1 victory to open the day before a 3-2 comeback to win their second straight series in American Athletic Conference play.
For the second straight game, a clinching home run from junior catcher Chloe Yeatts led the Owls (26-4, 5-0) to victory in the first outing before position-mate Corin Dammeier came off the bench to hit the game-winning double, beating the Blazers (11-15, 1-4 AAC) in the nightcap.
In another masterclass effort from junior pitcher Autumn Courtney, she yielded just two hits in game one and is now responsible for 13 of the team's 26 wins. Senior Ainsley Lambert, the top closer in the nation, earned the win in the second outing after pitching a season-high four innings to move to 3-0 on the season.
After four scoreless innings, back-to-back hits from sophomore shortstop Kiley Channell and freshman second baseman Destiny Johns put the Owls in scoring position. Yeatts then got the job done with a hard-hitting single to center field to score both for the 2-0 lead.
Johns completed the hat trick with her third hit of the game in the top of the seventh and Yeatts went yard to right field, bringing home both for the game's finishing touches.
The Owls got on base in the top of the fifth with a leadoff walk from junior third baseman Jesiana Mora and capitalized on it with an RBI double to centerfield by sophomore outfielder Kiley Shelton to put FAU on the board.
More came in in the sixth. Freshman OF Bella Foran was hit by a pitch to lead it off, and she later advanced to third on a Kylie Hammonds single. Two straight sacrifices, first from Channell on the bunt and then Johns on the sacrifice fly, brought home Foran as the tying run.
The top of the seventh saw a leadoff walk by Yeatts. Following two outs, Dammeier stepped up to the plate and hit a perfectly placed ball down the right field line to score the winning run.
