BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic softball team closed out the fourth and final game of Paradise Classic with the 8-1 victory over Georgia State on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Owls finish their season-opening tournament undefeated, with resume-building wins over SEC Ole Miss, for their first 6-0 start since 2016.
Florida Atlantic started off scoring early once again when sophomore shortstop
Kiley Channell hit an RBI double to tie the game 1-1. Sophomore
Bella Cimino then walked with the bases loaded to take the lead. The Owls then capitalized on an error by Georgia State and extended their lead 4-1. Florida Atlantic scored four runs on three hits to close out the half-inning on top. With another error by the Panthers,
Jesiana Mora scored to extend the lead to 5-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, freshman
Destiny Johns hit her first collegiate double to get the inning started. Mora, with another hit on the day, had a two-RBI double to left field to bring in
Bella Foran and Johns to improve the score to the game-ending 8-1.
Jaden Martinez registered her second start of the season. Junior
Autumn Courtney picked up another win to improve her record to 3-0 on the season after going in relief for Martinez in the top of the third. Courtney threw four innings as she struck out five out of her 12 batters faced.
- Courtney continues to lead the staff with 30 strikeouts. She is the first Owl to record three wins in the team's first six games since Tatum Buckley in 2018
- Mora went 3-for-4 on the day with a run and three RBIs. All three of her hits were doubles
- Junior Chloe Yeatts finishes the weekend with nine hits in 17 at-bats for a team-leading .643 batting average
- Sophomore Ciara Gibson recorded two of the team's runs
- Four runs in the opening inning is the most by the Owls to open a game this season
The Owls will open up the Joan Joyce Classic on Thursday, Feb. 13, against Minnesota. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
