BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 18/19/25 Florida Atlantic softball team took down Minnesota with a 13-4 run-rule victory on the opening night of the Joan Joyce Classic.
The Owls (7-0) needed just four innings of work on offense to put up a season-high 13 runs, holding the Golden Gophers (1-4) to one before the bottom of the fifth. All nine FAU batters found their way on base with runs coming in bunches for each inning.
With the win, Florida Atlantic continues their best unbeaten start since 2016 and now has victories over teams in the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC.
A leadoff walk from junior OF
Kylie Hammonds led to her scoring the opening run, advancing on an error and crossing home plate off a single from junior third baseman
Jesiana Mora. The Owls scored two more, with Mora heading home thanks to a double off the wall from sophomore shortstop
Kiley Channell.
The Owls outmatched their run total in the bottom of the second. Sophomore
Ciara Gibson blasted a three-run shot to right field for her first collegiate home run, upping the score to 6-0. Mora then tacked on a fourth run of the frame by stealing home on a strikeout.
Loading the bases in the bottom of the third multiple times, the Owls took advantage with four more runs. Their final inning of Florida batting Atlantic saw two doubles lead to two runs, with one from sophomore catcher
Corin Dammeier leading to a score off a
Bella Foran single, and a Hammonds double bringing home Dammeier.
In between the Owl' bats coming to life was strong efforts on defense, highlighted by a diving bobbling catch by Channell to make the out.
