BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic softball team remains undefeated after a five-inning shutout victory over Missouri State by a score of 11-0 on Saturday evening as part of day three of the Paradise Classic.
While plenty of runs from the offense were found throughout, it was senior pitcher
Gabby Sacco who was the star of the night, earning her second career no-hitter.
With the win, the Owls continue their best start since 2016 with a 5-0 record.
Florida Atlantic put runs on the board early in the first inning. Redshirt sophomore OF
Kylie Hammonds, batting in leadoff for the first time, began the night with a double to center field, which she eventually scored on thanks to a hit from junior third baseman
Jesiana Mora. Later in the frame, junior
Chloe Yeatts showcased more of her power hitting with a double into the outfield that brought in two runners to build a 3-0 lead.
On Sacco's side, a pair of strikeouts in the top of the second inning set the tone for her historic outing. Strong defensive plays from Mora in the infield and Hammonds from the outfield helped keep the no-hitter intact.
It was the third inning where the Owls were able to tack on more runs, five of them. A double to right field from sophomore OF Kylie Shelton brought home two runners, with ensuing singles from freshman OF
Bella Foran and a second double by Hammonds scored two more. The bottom of the fourth offered opportunities to Owl newcomers with Foran, Yeatts and freshman UTL
Brooke Kuczynski scoring three runs, the latter two on a deep double from freshman UTL
Camrynn Guthrie for her first career hit.
The no-hitter was ultimately clinched by Sacco in the top of the fifth with two swing-and-miss strikeouts, giving FAU the 11-0 victory on the run rule.
- Sacco's no-no goes down as the 28th in program history and second of her collegiate career
- 11 runs mark a season high for the Owls
- Foran tallied three hits in three at-bats
- Yeatts went perfect at the plate as well, going 3-for-3. She has recorded hits in her 14 AB on the season, leading the team in OPS at 1.381
- Hammonds is the first Owl this year to record multiple doubles
