Tyler and Dylan Murphy - It Runs In the Family

The Murphy family has a deep history with Florida Atlantic baseball. Tommy Murphy played at FAU for then-Assistant Coach John McCormack from 1998-2000, met his wife Deborah at FAU, and went on to get drafted by the Angels in the third round of the 2000 MLB Draft. He now has two sons carrying on his legacy at Florida Atlantic. Tyler, who is a pitcher for the Owls, is entering his junior season, while Dylan, a catcher, is entering his first.
Tyler and Dylan have always been "two peas in a pod", as Tyler called them. The two grew up sharing a room, playing Little League, and playing in high school together, so being on the same team in college is very natural for them. After being at FAU for a few years without Dylan, Tyler is looking forward to finally being teammates once again. Their father, Tommy, describes it as a dream of his.
"It was amazing to see them pitch and catch in little league, even better in high school. The potential chance to see them play together in Division I baseball is every dad's dream," Tommy said.
During Tommy's time at Florida Atlantic, Coach McCormack was a part of the staff, and he is now Tyler and Dylan's head coach. Coach McCormack feels a lot of pride in the fact that a previous player would want to send their children to him and to the program. Tommy had similar words, calling Coach a part of the family.
"It's an honor that he would have them. As happy as he is that I would send my kids to him, I am honored that he was interested in having my kids there."
For Tyler and Dylan, their father's legacy is always in the back of their minds. They say it is a motivator rather than something that adds pressure to their careers. Seeing their dad on the walls of the building and playing for the same coach that he once did is a very special part of their journey. They credit their father with teaching them everything they know about baseball and even more about the mentality they both carry.
"We are both able to push ourselves to limits that most people can't, whether that is physically in the weight room or on the field and I think that is something that he had when he played and is something we have shared."
Taking what they have learned from their father, the two are looking to define their own paths at Florida Atlantic. Tyler collected Conference USA and American Athletic Conference honors in his first two seasons. The 2025 baseball season will be Tyler and Dylan's first collegiate baseball season together. The action kicks off February 14 at FAU Baseball Stadium.
