No. 16 Sandy Owls Secure Two Ranked Wins On Day One

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 16-ranked Florida Atlantic beach volleyball team finished their opening day perfect, earning a pair of ranked wins over No. 14 Washington, 3-2, and No. 17 FIU, 3-2.
The Sandy Owls are perfect on the season at 2-0 and 1-0 in CUSA play, while Washington fell to 1-0 and FIU dropped to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

No. 14 Washington got on the board first as Kate Stoughton and Olivia Strandberg fell in a three-set fight against the Huskies' Sarah Wilcock and Emma Hohenauer, 15-21, 22-20, 9-15. The Sandy Owls answered back to even the match at one as Sydney Schroder and Shantel Starling earned a three-set comeback win over Washington's Hannah Doyle and Alina Urzua, 21-23, 21-11, 15-8, on court five. Florida Atlantic then took the 2-1 lead with a court three win as Kate McLaughlin and Kendall Mignerey captured a tight three-setter against Washington's Brooke Balue and Niki Egan, 21-16, 14-21, 15-13. Marketa Svozilova and Ashleigh Adams clinched the match for the Sandy Owls, earning a straight-set sweep on court one against the Huskies' Lauren Wilcock and Katarina Pantovic, 21-19, 21-12. The Sandy Owls got their first point on the board on court two as Julie Honzovicova and Klaire VanDeusen picked up a straight-set win over the Panthers' Sofie Vogel and Arianna Franklin, 21-16, 25-23. Florida Atlantic evened up the dual at two on court three with Kate McLaughlin and Kendall Mignerey taking a three-setter over FIU's Aleksandra Chudzik and Julia Panko, 21-19, 13-21, 15-11.
